Welcome Jayde! Congratulations on starting your certificate III.
Ask as many questions as you like no matter how silly you feel they might be, you'll be surprised how many other people want to know the same thing. Hope that your fellow early childhood professionals can help out with answers, I'll do what I can.
If you can't find things on the site you need, just ask. :)

QUOTE- "remember - these are the kids who will running the nursing homes we may be in down the track!"

Now that is a scary thought....

I believe that in most cases it isn't a lack of quality carers, as the ones that I have seen do a fantastic job.

I just think that the child care workers are too overworked to reach their full capabilities. They have to spread themselves too thinly over the children they are caring for.

In this way, I don't think we are getting what we are paying for.

Unfortunately it is still the dollar that is the most important in issues like health and education. But what sort of price can you put on children's care?

The one valid point that the report does raise is that it will force smaller centres to employ more staff and possible go out of business.

I already believe that the more diverse range of child care options available the better the quality of care is for children.

Funny isn't it, if you are a mum with quads, you get help at home. You almost have a nanny for free! They just don't promote it. I wonder why!

The pollies won't take childcare seriously until we have the community telling them it's important. That's not going to happen while parents are tired and exhausted anyway. We could start a few chain emails though and get them directed to a few people in power.

I have been using signing with kids for years now, and it has results as the kids can communicate - even if it's to say - "NOT HAPPY JAN". THey can express themselves.

We'll never wipe out chewing - it can be awful, but just make sure the victim;'s needs are adressed and ensure the 'biter' isn't being baited and manipulated by other children. It's amazing what can happen when our backs are turned!

Hi,

I'm a Mum of four and carer for 20 years.

I think in many cases, children are getting quality care. The majority of workers are doing their absolute best to provide excellent care for children, even in some terrible circumstances. That is dedication at it's best - or is it just the good old Aussie work ethic?

Sadly in all forms of care - centre based, Family Day Care and Nannying (I've worked in all three) there are major issues. The only way to resolve them is to do something about it. Whether it be reporting to Directors/Supervisors, being honest with parents about their children's care - or reporting issues to the relevant authorities - all carers who see the down side of childcare must act.

In saying that - I have had my kids in care and cared for 100's of kids. There have only been a handful of things I'd jump up and down about (and I do!).

We are the only people who can change care for kids. When you next see eomething that shouldn't be happening, remember - these are the kids who will running the nursing homes we may be in down the track! So make sure it's good care!

I'd like your opinion, do you think parents around australia are getting what they pay for when it comes to child care?
Are they getting quality? Do their children get what we say we are giving them? Attention, cleanliness, patience?

What do you think? What do you see at work? Are we being honest to ourselves? To the children and parents in our care?

Also child care professionals should never let parents know who has bitten their child, they will ask, but it is highly unprofessional and a breach of confidentiality. It is not fair to the child that has bitten to be 'labelled'. As a child care professional if the child is a continual biter you will need to come up with stratergies to prevent this from happening.x

Do you have some other ideas to add to this topic?

Biting is quite common with children around 9months to 3years of age. It is mostly related to teething and frustration. Frustration because they can't use verbal communication with their peers, they may not be developmentally ready. Fighting over toys/equipment, other children taking things from them may be common triggers.
SUPERVISION is most important, but we can't be everywhere all of the time. Good team communication and working environment is going to make this easier.
READING to children from a young age (newborn), and at least one book/story a day is calming and will help to develop and encourage children's language development.
If you have a favourite story or familiar story, allow the child to read it to you, or parts from their memory.
MORE than one of the same toy, if possible, will help with fighting over toys.
If a child is young (under 1 and a half) put books around them and talk about the pictures, they will take it all in even if they can't talk. Language development will hopefully help a child to talk rather than express themselves through biting when upset.
You may show the biting child how upset the other child is when they are bitten, make it short and do not yell. Then redirect the biter to a quiet activity, reading, drawing, block building, food or drink. Don't take the biting child to the same activity every time when it happens, as they may associate that activity with biting and may bite to get to that activity.
Get more information on biting from books, go to the resources section of this site.

What are your opinions/views?

I am disappointed to hear this, as a 1:4 ratio in under twos would make a huge difference. Staff would have a little more time to do things, give more of themselves to the children. Staff would be less stressed, therefore calmer around the children. Supervision would also be improved (you would think) so hopefully less accidents. More attention to each child would also mean happier parents :)

What do you think? What else could be a benefit?
or
Is it a good thing the ratios haven't changed? Costs?

Hello and welcome, I am Nicole and have designed this website. I am a mother and qualified child carer. I have made this site as I feel it is important that we (child carers) have somewhere to go to gain knowledge and strengthen others. I feel there are a lot of hard working, dedicated child carers that don't always get the support they need. I hope this website will be of a huge benefit to you, which you will use often to communicate your thoughts and ideas with other carers of children. So lets get this site started by adding our ideas in the forum.......
Thank you
