nicole on "the importance of child care workers sharing their concerns"

it's not silly. For me, I would share my concerns with co-workers, supervisors because not only does it help with the stress of the concern, but they may be able to offer you information you didn't know about. It is also good if you can't do anything to progress the concern, and they may be able to.

If you're worried about a child's development they can seek assistance from services like early intervention. If you're worried about co-workers work ethics, discussing your concerns with the service director, stops you from building up frustrations that can be dealt with straight away. If it is something like oh&s issues the director may hold an information night.

If anyone else has got any ideas, please feel free to share them.

hi its kerri again this might sound silly to you people who have your cert III and diploma's just a Question: Why is it important that children services workers share their concerns with someone in the service and notify their supervisor' rahter than dealing with them on their own?

Please find a correction in relation to The Code Of Ethics. The original code was developed in 1990 but Early Childhood Australia have since re-written the code, the latest version was published in 2006.

You can report it to DOCS (department of community services)24 hour hotline 132 111 is the number to call. You do not have to inform your director but it would be wise. It will allow them to know your suspisions and they may have additional information all ready. It will also build trust between co-workers (yourself and the director).

For more information on why it is important to report suspected child abuse and/or neglect I would suggest you read
The code of ethics, this was developed in 1990 by Early Childhood Australia and they have this on their site
http://www.earlychildhoodaustralia.org.au/code_of_ethics/early_childhood_australias_code_of_ethics.html

Another beneficial piece of information that any childcare professional should read and familiarise themselves with is The Declaration of the Rights Of The Child
http://www.unicef.org/crc/index_30177.html

Let me know if you would like any additional information.

I think that there is a lack of childcare in the city, the country seems to hold it self ok. Do parents hold out waiting for what they feel is quality childcare? Well I think that when it comes down to it, so they should. They're thinking of their children, so they should be allowed to be 'fussy' when chosing the right care to suit their (families) needs. If childcare is too expensive, it's probably because centres have to raise costs to cover quality carers and resources. I don't believe the majority of australian families are well off, I just think that for the money they would spend on care compared to the wage they would receive going back to work, the benefits are to stay at home with their child(ren).

What do you think?

The news article from The Age on the Lack of Child Care Costs Jobs again seems to support the arguments of both sides of federal politics.

The opposition seems to think that child care is too expensive or too scarce.

The government thinks that Australians are well off enough to either care for the children themselves or make a choice on quality childcare.

What side of the fence do you sit? Or are you directly on top...

I'm sorry, but when are we going to let kids be kids. Sure, make certain our kids have access to quality care - but they already spend so much time in a school environment - why force it early. Wouldn't it be better to run sessions for the parents and carers for this age group. Train the adults on early learning, skills which will help over the next 7 years of schooling.
But it's so much easier just to dump our kids on someone else!

The ratios of four year olds to adults caring for them, doesn't allow the time for the 'why??' period in a child's life. In a school environment - not all children will have their questions answered, killing off theie desire to learn.

Yes I agree with good teachers - this isn't the case - but lets be real here - how many really good teachers do you know. We have had horrible issues with our children's education, because inexperienced teachers are teaching inexperienced kids!

Basically stuffing up their learning.

There are better ways to addresses 'school readiness' without taking the child out of the community. Where will the hours of imaginative play go? Where will the afternoons at the pool go?

Education can take many forms. I have had to reverse the effects of slack carers and teachers, to risk younger children being at risk. What sort of training will these teachers have - will they insist on Early Childhood Special Needs training?

School for four year olds, not a bad idea. It would prepare not only children, but Parents, especially mothers. Will it make Australians smarter? Quite possibly, I would like to see my daughter be given this opportunity, but that it just her, every child is different. It would allow children to adapt to school life a little slower and possibly more calmly, making it easier to learn all the things they need to know when they start BIG school.
What is your opinion?

Labor has announced that if it wins government, it will introduce a scheme of 'school for four year olds'. View the story for more detail.

Do you have an opinion on this?
