Getting what you want

I'd like your opinion, do you think parents around australia are getting what they pay for when it comes to child care?
Are they getting quality? Do their children get what we say we are giving them? Attention, cleanliness, patience?

What do you think? What do you see at work? Are we being honest to ourselves? To the children and parents in our care?

  2. Hi,

I'm a Mum of four and carer for 20 years.

I think in many cases, children are getting quality care. The majority of workers are doing their absolute best to provide excellent care for children, even in some terrible circumstances. That is dedication at it's best - or is it just the good old Aussie work ethic?

Sadly in all forms of care - centre based, Family Day Care and Nannying (I've worked in all three) there are major issues. The only way to resolve them is to do something about it. Whether it be reporting to Directors/Supervisors, being honest with parents about their children's care - or reporting issues to the relevant authorities - all carers who see the down side of childcare must act.

In saying that - I have had my kids in care and cared for 100's of kids. There have only been a handful of things I'd jump up and down about (and I do!).

We are the only people who can change care for kids. When you next see eomething that shouldn't be happening, remember - these are the kids who will running the nursing homes we may be in down the track! So make sure it's good care!

  3. QUOTE- "remember - these are the kids who will running the nursing homes we may be in down the track!"

Now that is a scary thought....

I believe that in most cases it isn't a lack of quality carers, as the ones that I have seen do a fantastic job.

I just think that the child care workers are too overworked to reach their full capabilities. They have to spread themselves too thinly over the children they are caring for.

In this way, I don't think we are getting what we are paying for.
