To follow up on past newspaper reports, Western Australian childcare professionals have been underpaid up to $35,000. Read more.

How much longer do we have to be mistreated this way before the government makes significant changes to encourage people to stay in the industry, rather than leave? Have your say.

Early childhood professionals are underpaid

Recent federal Workplace Ombudsman reports that were released show childcare services underpaying staff in Queensland and Western Australia. The staff members are now being backpaid over $7000.

SA child care going down hill?

As many of 41 child care services throughout South Australia are under investigation because of numerous breaches of national standards and regulations.

The breaches include, the number of qualified staff per ratio of the service, the use of physical force and abusive language towards children, inappropriate restraining of a child, unexplained injuries to children, services management of behaviour, eg. biting and scratching, nappy change routines, infectious desease control and cleanliness of the services.

Mem Fox’s comments - Time for bed

As a mother of two and a childcare worker at Willows Preschool and Early Learning Centre, Denise Stephens said she finds Mem Fox’s comments “offensive” and “soul destroying”.

Many early childhood professionals have been taking a stand for themselves after feeling under attack, from comments made by the popular children’s author earlier in the week.

ABC DEVELOPMENTAL LEARNING CENTRES completed the sale of its British voucher business yesterday  for $190 million, but the big question still remains: what else will be offloaded as the child care operator tries to stay afloat?

Now we wonder if ABC’s Australian businesses will be free from a quick sale of assets to pay off debts over $1 billion.

Child care professionals around australia have been excited with the slowly emerging news that the ratio of under two’s will change from 1:5.

Maxine McKew said the dominant ratio of one carer to five children for under two years of age was “not good enough”, but Ms McKew declined to nominate an alternative figure.

The Australian Government was going to rank all child care centres from A to E depending on the quality of the service, but have since scrapped that idea after resistance from parents and the community.

The Australian Government has put forward a new plan to make all new child care centres have a two year probationary period and the ratios in babies rooms (under two’s) would change from 1:5 to 1:3, putting less stress on the children and allowing the service to provide a higher standard of care to children.

Maxine McKew, said the Rudd Government would demand more from child-care operators and expect standards to rise without fee increases because taxpayers and parents were “not getting enough” for the billions of dollars poured into the industry.

Well known and usually ever so popular children’s author, Mem Fox has slammed parents of children under three, who put their young children in fulltime child care, comparing it with child abuse.

“Babies have very much higher levels of stress in childcare.” Fox Said.

“Do they realise that a child needs love more than anything else in the world? It needs love, time and attention.” The comments have hits newspaper headlines around the country and people from various groups and organisations are speaking up.

Two Western Australian child care workers charged with assault

Two child carers from a centre in Western Australia have been charged with aggravated assault, after using a knife to threaten a four year old child. The co-workers also slammed the child against a wall, it has been stated by perthnow.

The assault was carried out on a four-year old boy who was under their care at an ABC Learning child care centre in Kelmscott, perthnow reported. read more
